fearfully and wonderfully made

78% of you guessed correctly. :-) We're having a boy and a girl!*

We're thrilled to death, both of us were hoping for one of each. And I was even more happy to see that they both were really healthy.

Tim was there with me for the ultrasound, and it was really great to have him there. I think it made it more real for both of us to see them, and to know a little more about who they are.

It was fun, too, to see exactly how they were positioned. Last night as the little boy started to wail on me, I was able to show Tim where to put his hand, and he really could feel the movements (he's felt little flutters before, but nothing this pronounced).

So incredibly happy!!!

*and there wasn't any ambiguity on which was which!

More below--pictures and details!

The boy is the lower one (Baby A, though I think he was Baby B at the last ultrasound--they said the lower one gets the A and the other gets to be B), and slightly bigger (14 oz., a good size for his age). He's backwards and breech on my left hand side, which isn't a problem at this point (he's got plenty of time to turn himself right-side--or wrong-side up!), except that he has a habit of kicking the nerves in my lower abdomen and sometimes it's a bit excruciating. The other day I almost screamed when I stood up--I didn't know what the pain was then, but now I know it's right where his little feet are positioned.

The picture of his face is a little difficult to distinguish, I think because he was facing backwards. But you can see his little arms, one under his head almost as if he were resting on it, and the other is close to his mouth, almost as if he were about to suck his thumb.

I love the picture of his spine, his vertabrae are beautiful.

Our girl is transverse, basically laying sideways above my belly button. She's 12 ozs. She feels a little less rambunctious, perhaps because of the way she's positioned--she started out as the wild child (in an ultrasound a couple months ago, the doctor looked almost in disbelief at her wiggling frantically around her sac and told me that I would soon be really uncomfortable).

I love her profile, she has such a pretty little face and a chubby little "buddha belly."

Her feet are precious, too.

You can see that her feet are right by her brother's sac, though I can't really identify what part of him I'm seeing there. The ultrasounds are hard to interpret sometimes. I got really excited during the ultrasound because I thought I could see the boy's two eyes in his face--turned out to be his two kidneys in his belly!

ooo! I'm so excited for you four?! A boy and a girl what fun! Thanks again for a great day on Wednesday. It was good to have you in my new home and then to visit your new home. I look forward to more visits, especially once your little ones come into the world.

Oooo. So I guess they aren't identical, then, eh? :)

Posted by: funke at July 20, 2007 06:54 PM

I believe identical is in one sac (one egg that split) and fraternal is two sacs (two eggs).

I'm SO EXCITED!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to talk to you!

Actually, identical can be in one sac or two sac, and have one placenta or share a placenta (best is not sharing anything). I think it depends on how quickly the egg separates after it's fertilized. The slowest separation--and the rarest--is what causes conjoined twins.

Yes, but if there is one boy and one girl, they can't have come from the same egg, right?

Posted by: funke at July 21, 2007 12:50 AM

No, they can't, you're right, Funke. They're definitely not identical!!

But there's kind of an odd new (and rare) kind of twin they've discovered, I don't remember what its called...I don't know why I find it so fascinating, probably way too much reading about twin stuff.

Fraternal= 2 eggs + 2 sperm
Identical=1 egg + 1 sperm dividing in half
New kind of twin=1 egg+2 sperm, egg divides

So basically, the kids share all of the genetic material from the mother's side, and only half from the father's side. So, basically, there could be sexual and other differences between them, but they share a lot of the same characteristics.

Weird, huh?

Hopefully this is the only time you will mistakes kidneys for eyes. :)

Carrie, we were both laughing so hard at your comment!

"My, what nice kidneys you have!" "Do you have blue kidneys or gray kidneys?" "Actually, my kidneys are hazel!"

Glad to be of amusement. :)
